Performance Evaluation of Inter-virtual Local Area Network (VLAN) Routing Using the Router-on-a-stick (ROAS) Architecture

Abstract
Inter VLAN communication is an essential requirement in campus and office networks to support data exchange between different divisions efficiently. One commonly used method is Router on a Stick (ROAS), which enables inter VLAN routing using a single physical interface with multiple sub-interfaces. However, this architecture has limitations, particularly when handling high network traffic due to the possibility of bottlenecks on the trunk link. This study aims to analyze the performance of inter VLAN routing using the ROAS method based on Quality of Service (QoS) parameters, including latency, jitter, packet loss, and recovery time. The research was conducted using Cisco Packet Tracer simulation involving three VLANs representing Academic, Finance, and Library divisions. Performance testing was conducted under two traffic conditions, namely normal traffic and heavy traffic. The results showed that under normal traffic conditions, the average latency was 1 ms, jitter was 0 ms, and packet loss was 0%, indicating highly stable network performance. Under heavy traffic conditions, latency increased to 1.2–1.3 ms, jitter reached 8.5 ms, and packet loss ranged from 0–1%, while the recovery time after link disruption was recorded at 3–4 seconds. Based on the TIPHON QoS standards, all parameters remained within acceptable limits, indicating that the ROAS architecture is suitable for small to medium-scale networks. Overall, the evaluation results show that the ROAS architecture is feasible for supporting inter VLAN communication in the tested scenario, although increased traffic load may affect the jitter value in the network.
