Abstract

Chemistry learning at the senior high school level continues to face significant challenges, particularly students’ low conceptual understanding of abstract topics and teachers’ limited ability to implement interactive and contextual instructional media. This community service program aimed to improve students’ basic chemistry understanding, teachers’ pedagogical competence, as well as students’ motivation and self-confidence at SMA Al-Muslimun Sei Kijang, Pelalawan Regency, Riau. The program was conducted through an interactive workshop based on hands-on and minds-on approaches, including interactive lectures, discussions, simple experimental demonstrations, training on digital learning media, and enrichment using National Science Olympiad (OSN) chemistry modules. Evaluation was carried out through pre-test and post-test assessments, participant observation, and activity documentation. The results showed improvements across all major indicators, including basic chemistry understanding (88.46%), interest in chemistry (89.83%), perception of chemistry importance (88.19%), and students’ self-confidence (89.68%), with a normalized gain score of 0.525, categorized as moderate to high. The program also improved teachers’ competence in utilizing instructional media and designing experiment-based learning activities. A distinctive aspect of this program is its collaborative approach involving both teachers and students simultaneously in a single chemistry learning intervention model. This program has potential for replication in schools with similar characteristics.
