Abstract

Dyes are pollutants that can disturb the balance of the ecosystem, besides that most dyes are also toxic, one of which is cationic methylene blue. The adsorption process of methylene blue dyes is carried out using bentonite which has been modified with Ethylene Diamine Tetra Aceticacid (EDTA). The stages of this research are the process of modification of bentonite, bentonite characterization test results of modification and application of Methylene Blue dyes, at the time of the modification process the variation of the mixing of bentonite with EDTA based on the cation exchange capacity (CEC) of the bentonite, namely variations of 1x CEC of bentonite, 2x CEC of bentonite, 3x CEC bentonite. Bentonite-EDTA characterization test was carried out using SEM and XRD instruments, then analysis to see the absorption ability of EDTA-modified bentonite to methylene blue dyes was analyzed using a UV-VIS spectrophotometer. Bent-EDTA variation 3x CEC shows the results of adsorption of methylene blue dyes is best because it can reduce the concentration of dyes up to 80%, this is supported by the results of XRD analysis which shows the increase in the distance between fields (d) bentonite-EDTA from 15, 84 Å to 17.08 Å which shows that there is an interaction between bentonite and EDTA.
